Character History:
We first meet Billy in detention at Angel Grove High, which he was forced to attend after accidentally blowing up his lunch box in his locker. He reveals that he is bullied a lot for just about everything from his name to his obsessive-compulsive tendencies (keeping all his pencils organized in straight lines on his desk). Billy later reveals that he is on the Autism spectrum, which makes it difficult for him to understand social cues and read emotions in his interactions with other people.
Billy is the character who is responsible for bringing the Power Rangers together, and making them into Power Rangers. He enlists Jason's help to get into the abandoned gold mine, where he wants to blow up the rock and see what he can find, an activity he used to do with his dad. There, they meet Kimberly, Trini, and Zack. Once Billy explodes the rock wall, they find the power coins which change their lives.
At first, Billy is hesitant to return to the mine and investigate where the coins came from, but he follows Jason and Kimberly (who in turn are chasing after Trini and Zack) because he wants to be a part of something, and not chicken out. The five teens jump miraculously over a large canyon, and discover a pool of water at the bottom of a cliff that leads them to an underground cavern, where they find a dormant spaceship. The spaceship turns out to be millions of years old, and home to a robot named Alpha 5 and a consciousness named Zordon. Alpha and Zordon explain that the Power Coins have chosen the teens to be the next Power Rangers, heroes which are sworn to protect the Zeo crystal, which has the power to create or destroy life. The crystal is located buried under their town of Angel Grove. To do this, the Rangers must connect to the morphing grid, which will summon special armor and allow them to control the Zords, giant dinosaur-themed robots.
Billy is excited by the chance to become a superhero, wondering if they're more like Spider-Man or Iron Man. He's also excited by the prospect of having four new friends to spend his time with. The teens are put through an intense training regimen, learning how to fight monsters called Putties, via the ship's hologram system. They learn martial arts in about a week. Billy struggles with this, having never really fought before, but the enhanced strength and agility that the power coin gives him helps him through. They all struggle to connect to the morphing grid, and quickly become disillusioned with the whole idea of being Power Rangers.
During this training montage, Billy takes it upon himself to do some research and locate the Zeo crystal. Turns out it's buried beneath the Krispy Kreme donut shop in downtown Angel Grove.
The reason the Rangers have to learn to morph and fight is because Rita Repulsa, herself a former Power Ranger who fought beside and later betrayed Zordon, has returned, and is building a giant minion named Goldar with whom she seeks to reach the Zeo crystal. Rita visits Trini in her home and intimidates her into gathering the Rangers, who find Rita and try to fight her without use of their morphing ability. She easily defeats them and ties them up, threatening to kill Zack unless one of them tells her the location of the Zeo crystal. Unwilling to watch Zack suffer, Billy gives in, telling Rita the crystal is under the Krispy Kreme. She then sends Billy plummeting into the water, where he drowns. The Rangers try to save him, but it's too late, he dies.
Distraught, the Rangers bring Billy's body back to the ship. There, Zordon tells them there's nothing he can do to bring Billy back. All the teens have a heartfelt moment where they admit they would all die for each other, the way Billy did. This moment of selflessness manages to connect them to the morphing grid finally. Zordon uses the morphing grid to revive Billy, and all the Rangers morph into their armor.
The time has finally come for the final showdown with Rita. The Rangers fight off her Putties, but while they're distracted, Rita takes Goldar downtown and begins wreaking havoc. Seeing this, the Rangers take their Zords downtown to try to stop Goldar. They fight Goldar and more Putties, finally ending up positioning their Zords in a line between Goldar and the crater where the Zeo crystal is located. Things are looking bleak, and it doesn't look like they'll be able to stop Goldar from breaking through. Goldar pushes the Zords into the crater, and all the Rangers are prepared to die fighting.
Suddenly, at the last minute, the Zords combine into a giant humanoid Zord which Billy dubs the Megazord. They use this new Megazord to finally defeat Goldar and Rita, and save the town of Angel Grove, and the Earth. Jason backhand slaps Rita into space, and the day is won. Billy makes the Megazord dance in celebration. After this, the teens return to their normal lives, though they are forever changed by the experience. Billy now has four friends with whom to spend his time. They know that there's a possibility others will come after the Zeo crystal, but they are ready to defend it.
Abilities/Special Powers:
Powers
The power coin gives Billy enhanced strength, durability, and agility. He can lift incredible weights, jump over canyons, and scale a cliff incredibly quickly. He can also summon protective armor by connecting with the morphing grid.
Skills
Aside from the powers gifted by the coin, Billy is incredibly smart. He can hack into a government issued tracking anklet and trick its GPS tracking. He is also trained in the use of explosives, though mistakes do happen from time to time.
Third-Person Sample:
Billy stands in his basement at his mom's house, and surveys his kingdom. All across one wall are maps, charts, news articles, pinned and posted and connected with bits of string. A conspiracy wall, maybe. Except not a conspiracy, it was his way of locating the Zeo crystal. Which he did. And which they fought to defend, and won! Billy feels pretty proud of that.
Except now that he knows where the Zeo crystal is, he doesn't need his wall anymore. Not, like... He's not going to demolish the wall. That would make the house structurally unsound. He just is going to take down the articles and charts and maps and bits of string. It takes the better part of the afternoon to do it, carefully folding all the maps in case he needs them later, and keeping everything organized in neat folders and piles, but he doesn't have anywhere else he needs to be today. Detention's not til Saturday, and the Rangers are taking a much deserved break from training now that Rita's been defeated. His mom is out shopping for a new minivan, he's got the house to himself.
Hours later, the wall is clear, except for three things: A news article on the battle against Goldar, a printed out group selfie of Billy and his friends, and a piece of paper that's been folded and crumpled, gotten wet and then dried a little rippled, smoothed out again as best as he could. On it are little pencil doodles, lightning bolts and squiggles. Random art courtesy of Kimberly. And some words, in the middle of the page. "WE SHOULD FORM A BAND." Billy has no musical talents whatsoever, but if Kimberly and Jason want to start a band, he'll try to learn an instrument.
Satisfied with his work, he heads upstairs to grab a soda from the kitchen. Except the kitchen he walks into doesn't look anything like his mom's kitchen. It's huge, as if it's meant to feed hundreds of people instead of just a family of two. Confused, he goes back out into the hallway. Except the hallway doesn't look like his mom's house either! The walls are lined with mirrors and the hallway stretches on and on, with doors lining either side.
"What the-- heck?" He wonders aloud. Something weird is going on. Dropping into a ready stance, fists held in front of him just in case an attacker jumps out of nowhere in front of him, he slowly starts to edge his way down the hallway. He'll figure out what's going on. He has to.
First-Person Sample:
[ This is a little weird. He still had his phone from home, though it isn't getting any signal or wifi or anything. But now he has this other phone, too, which he can use to connect to a local network. He decides to give it a try. ]
Um, hi. [ He waves to the camera. ] My name's Billy Cranston. Kids used to call me Billy Crams Tons, like crams tons of crayons in your-- You know what? That's not important. I'll skip it. And maybe farther out than that, so we can figure out where we are? I'm pretty good at figuring out maps. Thought maybe I could help.
[ Not knowing what else to say, he just sort of pauses for a minute, nods, then turns off the recording. ]
